The old standard incandescent light bulb could be banned here and replaced by the dearer but longer lasting energy efficient compact florescent bulb.While the immediate price comparison is $6.83 to a budget $1.00 100w, the florescentbulbs have a 9 year life and only use 20% of the energy of the incadescent bulbs.

The New Zealand Government suggested that its incadescent bulbs could be phased out in 2-3 years. NZ could follow Australia's lead which will see new new lighting standards by 2010, which would reduce energy costs and cut Australian greenhouse gas emissions by 4 million tonnes by 2012.

A director of Enegy Mad, the company that made the new Eco bulbs, said he wouldn't be surprised if New Zealand followed Australia's very bold move.

He claimed households could cut their power bill by 10% or $150.00 a year if they used the energy saving bulbs.

Nationwide savings could be $225 million a year and cut carbon emissions much more than the suggested ministerial car fleet replacement.

He claimed the new bulbs in homes now were already saving 60,000- 70,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, and a zero could be added to that if the whole country changed over.

The state of California has also moved to phase out incadescent bulbs by 2012 under a proposed " How many legislators does it take to change a light bulb Act".
